Most nations of the Old World maintain navies of some description. The Empire’s navy was put in a difficult position when Marienburg became independent but it has managed to maintain its traditions despite the loss of its best port. Watercraft are most used along the various rivers of the Empire, though the fleet is active along the coast of the province of Nordland. Rivers connect most the Empire’s major cities and this is no coincidence. It is much easier to engage in trade when barges can take large amounts of goods quickly from place to place. The waterways offer safer and faster means to transport goods and men where needed.[1a]
