The Watchmen in the Night as depicted in Total War: Warhammer III.
The Watchmen in the Night are a specialized unit of Armoured Kossars created by the current Tzarina of Kislev, Katarin Bokha. They act as a sort of military police within the armies of the Motherland, rooting out opposition to the Tzarina's rule within the ranks and ensuring that the famously roudy Kossars abide by the law.[1]
The existence of the Tzarina’s secret police is no secret, for the Watchmen's ranks are not just filled with spies who report on other regiments, but also the toughest Kossars directly under command. In battle, the Watchmen will fight as their own unit, trading the Pistol used by their peers for dual-wielded Scimitars imbuded with Ice Magic. Just as they stand as a reminder to the other Kossars of their loyalty to the crown out of battle, in the battlefield their prescence inspires their fellow warriors to remain firm in the face of the most fearsome of foes.[1]
The Watchmen are – by decree of the Tzarina – infallible in their interpretation of the law. The penalties they select are always appropriate for the crimes in question. They are never seen to wrongly convict, and while they may arrest and extract confessions from those later proved to be innocent, it is no fault of theirs, for their actions are always justified.[1]
Yet Katarin does not intend to institute a reign of terror; she wants only to be able to deal with her enemies quickly and efficiently. Thus the most important qualification for becoming a Watchman is absolute loyalty to her, closely followed by competence. Those who display excessive cruelty do not last long in the prestigious ranks, while the incompetent generally die in the course of their duty – such is their vocation.[1]
