Walking Wounded

Walking Wounded

A rough assemblage of state troops, mercenaries and militiamen clambered from the pallets and stretchers of the hospitaller tents, taking up their swords with groans of effort and standing shoulder to shoulder in a thin line across the plaza. Too wounded to flee, with infections in their wounds and phlegm filling their lungs, they resolved to give their lives in defence of those priestesses who had braved contagion and death in an attempt to restore them to good health.[1a]
