Varenna is a typical Tilean village near the city-state of Trantio that produces grain and wool, but its history is much older and more troubled than one might think.[2a]

History[]

Varenna was originally a town in early Tilea that was destroyed during the Orc and Goblin incursions between 475 and 978 IC. According to legend, the defending mercenary general Justintine of Varenna was the first to come up with the idea of taking the army's treasures in a treasure chest onto the battlefield, as the walls of the town had collapsed as a result of an earthquake and the town could therefore not be held. Although the Greenskins who had attacked the town were defeated, the town itself was never rebuilt and eventually the present-day village of the same name was settled near the ruins.[1a]

Ruins of Varenna[]

While the ruins of Varenna are close to Trantio, the site of the battle for the treasure chest is not documented. Both the people of Luccini and Remas claim the battlefield was near their respective cities, and many Old World nobles trace their lineage to one of the surviving victors of the legendary Battle of Varenna.[1a]

Trivia[]

Varenna is a real-world commune (municipality) on Lake Como in the Province of Lecco in the Italian region of Lombardy, located about 60 kilometres north of Milan and about 20 kilometres northwest of Lecco. Varenna was founded by local fishermen in AD 769 and later allied with the neighbouring commune of Milan. In 1126 it was destroyed by the rival commune of Como, and later received the refugees from the Isola Comacina, who had met the same fate in 1169.
