Umberto was the mercenary general tasked with defending the Tilean city-state of Miragliano when its prince, Lorenzo of Miragliano, was far from home to organise a war against Miriagliano's rival city-state of Remas.[1a]
During his stewardship of the city, the villages around Miragliano were attacked by the Skaven. Umberto advised his superior, Giuliano of Miragliano, to send three squadrons of cavalry to deal with that threat and also to put the Sewer Guard on alert.[1a]
Twelve days later Miragliano was besieged by a horde of Skaven from the Blighted Marshes, in what was known as the Fall of Miragiano. Yet, thanks to General Umberto, the city was able to resist the ratmen's assault for six days. At the end of that time, Umberto sacrificed his own life in a noble attempt to hold the main square of the city against the ratmen to provide more time for the city's defenders to retreat to the city's citadel.[1a]
