The Screaming one glares into the mortal world from the Horned Rat's Realm of Ruin.[1a]
The Screaming One was a Verminlord, a Daemon of the Horned Rat, summoned into the mortal world as part of a ploy to control the Great Vortex and bend it to the will of the Skaven. Summoning the Daemon required the gathering of a large hoard of Warpstone, a task Grey Seer Vulscreek sent his scribe-slave Sneek Scratchett to accomplish with his assigned clan.[1a]
The ritual, called the "Ritual of Dark Scrying," shattered the skies of the world and summoned the Verminlord to Vulscreek's lair in the Fetid Jungles of Lustria. Not willing to risk his own life, the Grey Seer sent his minion to treat with the Daemon. The Screaming One provided the scribe with an ensorcelled bell clapper, which he demanded Scratchett hand over to Vulscreek to be attached to the Machine of Doom and Curses. The Screaming One also imparted the necessary Rituals of Fabrication to the scribe which were required to properly build the machine.[1a]
After the Horned Rat was summoned into the world, following the sacrifice of the Order of the Grey Seers, the Screaming One sought out Scratchett, who had both enjoyed and been cursed with the role of being the Horned Rat's herald. Since it was the Verminlord who set the lowly scribe on that path, the Daemon demanded reciprocation.[1b]
