The Hanged Peasant is a tavern in Castle Bordeleaux, the walls of its back terraces obscenely painted. Come autumn, the light of the setting sun gleams on the vines that cover the trellis above the tavern yard, sparrows noted for feasting on the last of the summer grapes. The waddling tavern keeper, Jules, is a man noted for leaning over the table in a cascade of jowls.[1a]
