Templar

A templar of Bretonnia

A templar, formally known as a Knight of the Temple or a Knight Templar, is a Human warrior who has sworn their sword and life to the service of one of the cults of the Old World, usually by acting to defend and secure their places of worship. Some fighting men in the Empire, Bretonnia, Estalia, and Tilea choose to ally themselves, usually for personal spiritual reasons, directly with one of the religious groups of the Old World by joining a military order supported by their particular religion.[1a]

Templars may enter the service of a deity for a fixed period or, more rarely, for life. Sometimes a knight will become a templar for a time as a penance for oath-breaking or for violating some other taboo.[1a]

All templar military orders demand absolute obedience and a high standard of martial prowess; the knights come under the command of the local temple's authorities and live within the temple precincts.[1a]

It is the duty of the templars to provide guards for the temple and for important religious dignitaries of the faith and to provide whatever military force might be required by the heads of the cult for the destruction of heresies, the prosecution of holy wars, and the protection of the faithful from persecution or infidel attacks.[1a]
