The Old World Map Advanced Heroquest

The Southern Sea, depicted on a map of the Old World.[8a]

The Southern Sea is a body of water that lies to the south-east of the continent of the Old World. It is one of the most heavily trafficked maritime regions in the Known World. It surrounds the Estalian peninsula and is touched by the Tilean Sea to the east, the Middle Sea to the north, the Arabyan Gulf to the south, and the Great Ocean to the west.[6a][7a]

History[]

After the retreat of the High Elves from their colonies in the Old World following the War of the Beard with the Dwarfs, ancient tribes of Men flourished on the shores of the Southern Sea. These were the ancestors of the Men of the present day city-states of Tilea and the kingdoms of Estalia.[1a]

To this day these two peoples fiercely contest control of the Southern Sea, but it is Tilea who derives the greatest bounty from the region, having established a highly profitable trade route with Araby and the Old World's colonies in the New World across the Great Ocean.[3a][4a][5a]

What unites these two fractious peoples is only their hatred towards a common foe -- pirates. Whether these reavers come from the island of Sartosa or Araby, makes no difference, as not even a centuries-old enmity can rival an equally ancient enemy of commerce.[2c]

The Southern Sea is also patrolled by the Dwarf Navy and many of their largest warships, known as Dreadnoughts, are seen here and in the Black Gulf.[1b]

Trading[]

The northern city-state of Marienburg maintains good relations with the Tilean city-states, seeing them as trading and banking partners. Rather than trying to dominate the trade on the Southern Sea itself, Marienburg lets Tilean ships and Tilean agents in the employ of the merchant houses of the city-states handle its goods moving through the region. The Great Families of Marienburg and the ruling houses of the merchant princes of the Tilean city-states regularly exchange letters of credit to support their commercial activities.[2a]

However, the Magrittans are unhappy with the governing Marienburg Directorate's close relations with the doges and counsellors of Tilea, due to their clashes with Tilean vessels over control of trading rights and commercial passage in the Southern Sea.[2b]

Fools Point[]

Old World map 1st Edition

Fools Point Rocks is located on the eastern Estalian cost.

Fools Point, also known as Fools Point Rocks or the Isles of the Sirens,[11a] is a cluster of islands located on the southeastern coast of Estalia. Fools Point connects the waters of the Southern Sea with the Tilean Sea. Following the coastline in this region can be treacherous due to the presence of pirates but it can be lucrative for those who desire to trade with or purchase supplies from the city-state of Tobaro, and from there make their way to the mainland of Tilea, including the cities of Remas and Luccini.[7a][9a]

The Tobaran nobles known as Navigators hold the monopoly on sea trade to and from Tobaro's great harbour, for only they and they alone know the safe channels between the deadly rocks of Fools Point.[10a]

The Temple of Mathlann took interest in Fools Point after rumors surfaced that the Cult of Stromfalo maintained a heavy presence there.[10b]
