A Sea Elemental infused with the power of Ghyran, the Green Wind of Magic.
A Sea Elemental is an elemental entity of the ocean of unknown origin that takes the form of a giant humanoid composed of pure sea water. They are immensely destructive, and have control over the seas that surround them. They can bury their opponent in tidal waves, or summon storms, whirlpools and hurricanes. They often fall upon their victims as a mighty deluge, sweeping them from the decks and sinking their ship.[1a]
Role[]
According to scholars of magic, Ghyran, the Jade Wind of Magic, bears a certain equivalence to water. Those with the witchsight can see it fall to the earth like rain, flow along with brooks and rivers, and collect in pools. It is no great surprise then that the oceans of the world of Mallus contain within them great quantities of Ghyran.[2a]
Ghyran does not diffuse throughout the waters of the seas however. The Wind may move like water, but within the great oceans it becomes locally concentrated, drifting together in clumps. These intensities of Ghyran can lead to a flourishing of life, dense mats of seaweed or swarms of undulating jellyfish. Where Ghyran becomes most concentrated, the waters that bear it can become animated, forming the rough outline of a gigantic humanoid form.[2a]
A wild Sea Elemental is a frightening prospect. Infused with the Wind of Life they may be, but they are not nurturing or gentle in their temperaments. They are boisterous and violent, exuberant in their own strength and vitality to the detriment of those in their way. They seem to delight in acts of destruction, smashing ships and summoning whirlpools. They fall upon sailors with a rapacious frenzy, catching them up in the churning waters of their own bodies and drowning them therein. Despite their mindless nature, they are also capable of casting spells of the Lore of Life, specifically those which pertain to the ocean. [2a]
True Nature[]
Stories of Sea Elementals of animate Ghyran excite much debate among the Magisters of the Jade College. Some theorise that they have some kinship with the Naiads, being a spirit of nature manifested as living water. Others speculate that they are "Incarnate Elementals of Ghyran." As of yet, no rite has been developed enabling a wizard to summon a Sea Elemental, though some wizards claim to have bent them to their will for a short period of time.[2a]
Some say that as the ages pass, the demigod Triton and his kind slowly become more like the seas they are lord over, turning wilder and less controllable until there is very little to distinguish them from the towering waves and the raging storms of the ocean. The Sea Elementals, living mountains of blue-black water that rear out of the water in the barely recognisable shape of a huge man, are perhaps some stage of this process.[1a]
