The Sand Clam lives only in wet sand, usually by the sea shore or at the tidal margin. Although immobile, the Sand Clam is a voracious carnivore, preying mainly on seals and the larger seabirds. It lies buried under the sand and, whenever an unwary creature passes over it, the trap is sprung and the victim is caught by the jaw-like valves of its shell. Small creatures (under 2 feet) are crushed to death instantly, while larger victims are held fast and will usually be drowned by the tide.[1a]
