Rodentenland is a mythical island first mentioned in the Bestiarium of Johannes Krueger, a 16th-century IC scholar and polymath of the Old World.[1a]
According to Krueger, the island lies somewhere to the east of the continent of Lustria. In his writings, he claimed that Rodentenland was the birthplace of the so-called "ratkin," what are today more commonly known as the Skaven.[1a]
Krueger's theory was based on an ancient Estalian legend which told of shipwrecked mariners who, after resorting to cannibalism, were cursed by the sea god Manann and slowly transformed into rats. These cursed individuals, Krueger believed, were the first man-rat hybrids which became the ancestors of the modern Skaven species. He argued that the myth masked a proto-historical truth, interpreting it as evidence of an actual event rather than mere folklore.[1a]
He called for a united expedition by the kingdoms of the Old World to locate Rodentenland and exterminate its inhabitants. Despite such grand claims, no evidence of Rodentenland has ever been found. The island has never been located in any subsequent exploration of Lustria's eastern coast or the surrounding seas.[1a]
As such, Rodentenland is widely regarded by modern scholars as apocryphal, a fabrication born from misinterpretation and myth. It is often cited alongside other fantastical tales such as Halfling cannibal tribes in the New World or the Ogre Kingdoms beyond the Worlds Edge Mountains.[1a]
