Putrid Stump, also known as the Putrid Sump[3a], is one of the three major Skaven lairs, along with Fester Spike and Foul Peak, located within the mountain range of The Vaults.[1a]

This Skaven lair sits along an important route in the Under-Empire's main tunnelway. Underground rivers also pass through the area making the lair a major trade hub. Putrid Stump had long been at odds with its neighboring Skaven lair of Fester Spike. Only the timely intervention of the Under-Empire's ruling Council of Thirteen ensured that the conflict between the two lairs finally ended.
The excavation of the tunnel between Putrid Stump and the rest of the Under-Empire dates back to around -1500 to 0 IC.[2a]
