Sartosan crest
In Sartosa it is custom to elect a Pirate Prince of Sartosa. This is a rather grandiose title for one who does not really rule, but just settles disputes over loot with rough justice. Many such “Princes” have come and gone in the centuries up to the present time. Most only rule for a while and come to a bloody end, one The longest lasting has been the present notorious Pirate Princess of Sartosa, no doubt because her reputation for being ten times more cruel than any of her predecessors is no exaggeration![1b][5a]
These individuals are surrounded by a romantic aura, "The Pirate Prince of Sartosa" is a famous song about their deeds, known all around the Old World.[6a]
Election[]
Unlike Brionne a city which openly welcomes pirates and turns a blind eye to their dealings, Sartosa is actually run by pirates. It is administered far more harshly and much more efficiently than any other city in the Old World. Within the bounds of the harbour, Pirate Law applies, forbidding theft and offering frequently terminal punishments for murderers, thieves, swindlers and traitors. Disputes between captains are settled by the Pirate Prince of Sartosa - Master of Sartosa - the King of the Pirates elected annually from and by the pirate captains then in port.[2a]
Notable Pirate Princes of Sartosa[]
- Manlect the Obese - A merchant prince killed by the Assassin's Guild of Luccini.[4a]
- Lucciano Soprania - In the year 1801 IC, the ousted Pirate Prince of Sartosa, Lucciano Soprania, founded Port Reaver on the eastern coast of Lustria's Isthmus.[3a]
- Pirate King Draven - In 2315 IC, Pirate King Draven was employed to protect the merchant ships arriving and leaving Swamp Town from the pirates based in Port Reaver. He used his power to destroy the fleets of his competitors and then sacked Swamp Town himself.[3a]
- Pirate Princess of Sartosa - Actual ruler of Sartosa, her true name is never been revealed but an apocryphal tale says that Borgio the Besieger was once taken prisoner by the her and escaped by diving into the sea from the dungeon tower, which was conveniently leaning over a high cliff, and swam the Pirates' Current across to Tilea. Then he returned with a mercenary fleet, captured the princess and would not let her go until the pirates had paid him an enormous tribute gathered from their far-flung stashes of plunder. If this ever happened it must have been early in his career.[1a]
