"Never underestimate the power of the farmers and craftsmen that populate our lands. Humble they may be, but when working in harmony, they can be sharpened into a deadly weapon."

—Hu Weimin, Wu Xing Fighting Master[2]

The Peasant Long Spearmen, also called the "Warriors of Wind and Field," are the militia infantry units of the Grand Imperial Army of Grand Cathay, armed, as their name suggests, with a simple spear and raised from the peasants who comprise the vast population of the Celestial Empire.[1]

The true backbone of Grand Cathay and its army is its people, and they are numerous beyond count. While the Celestial Dragon Emperor is wise and his Cathayan Dragon children are benevolent leaders to the people under their command, they understand with the detachment of immortality that the one thing they will always have is more bodies. More men and women to man the battlements, more fighters to hold the line, more defenders to make the forces arrayed against them fight for every inch.[1]

Thus, the least-trained armies of Grand Cathay are still a power to be reckoned with through sheer force of numbers. Unlike the hired soldiers or lower classes of other cultures, the Warriors of Wind and Field feel a fierce loyalty to their cause and the Cathayan Dragons that watch over them. They may buckle and even break at times, but they know their role.[1]

Like all Cathayan melee units, Peasant Long Spearmen are Yang-aspected, increasing their morale and defence when within close proximity to a Yin-aspected unit. The endless ranks of Grand Cathay are expendable and expected to flee from battle when facing more than they can handle. Finishing the fight is the work of more disciplined and elite troops.[1]
