Pavises are often used in battle by Braganza's Besiegers, a mercenary company operating in Tilea.[1a]
The pavise is a large shield carried by crossbowmen to provide shelter on the battlefield as they reload. Roughly 4 feet tall and often painted with his unit's heraldry, the crossbowman plants the pavise on the ground like a personal wall. At its most effective when deployed in a line with other crossbowmen, the pavise provides good cover when firing at opposing troops and defending against enemy sorties, the soldier wielding a spear or sword from behind the planted pavise.[2a]
Dwarfs are also known to make use of heavy pavises as large as the Dwarfs who planted them and as wide as three, each have a reinforced slot that the warriors could extend spears, handguns or crossbows through. There isn't a Dwarf alive who didn;t feel safer with a roof over their head and stout walls around them.[4a]
Even the twisted Skaven use pavises to protect some of their long-range units, as bullets fired by a Warplock Jezzail leave behind a faint green streak. It is easy to track the shots back to their source, ensuring any return missile fire that the enemy can muster will follow. For this reason, what started out as a mere aiming platform for the Skaven longrifle has turned into a protective pavise designed to shield the vulnerable Jezzail team from incoming arrows, bolts, and bullets.[5a]
Pavise Types[]
- Tilean Pavise - The Tilean Pavise is a solid hunk of wood between its operator and the enemy, providing protection and confidence. The mercenary band, Braganza's Besiegers, is renowned for using this kind of pavise.[3a]
