Nagarythe was the northwesternmost kingdom of Ulthuan and is the ancestral home of both the Dark Elves and the Shadow Warriors. Destroyed during the Sundering all that remains of it are the Shadowlands and the Sunken Isles. A cold and windswept place, nothing now inhabits these lands except beasts and the wandering bands of Shadow Warriors which still make this dark place their home. The shattered coastal waters of Nagarythe are home to many monstrous creatures of the deep, stirred from the depths by the events of the Sundering, making navigation around its coast treacherous.

At the time of the Great Catastrophe and the First Great Chaos Incursion, the Elves were ill equipped to fight a war against Chaos. From the lands of Nagarythe came Aenarion the Defender, who would lead the Elves in the fight against Chaos, and become the first Phoenix King. Aenarion made his court at Anlec, in his homeland of Nagarythe, though the influence of the Sword of Khaine and the seeress Morathi twisted Aenarion and his land into a dark and cruel place. Nagarythe became inhabited by the most warlike and embittered Elves, and tales of cruelty at Aenarion's court led to the other provinces shunning Nagarythe.

After Aenarion's death and the crowning of Bel Shanaar as the new Phoenix King, Nagarythe continued to garner a sinister reputation. Elves unable to come to terms with the new era of peace congregated in Nagarythe, and the subversive Cults of Excess took hold among the population. When Malekith launched his bid for the Phoenix Throne, most of the population of Nagarythe rebelled with him plunging Ulthuan into civil war. The long civil war cumulated in the Sundering, where the dire magical energies unleashed by Malekith and his sorcerers shattered the land. Most of the coastal regions of Nagarythe and Tiranoc plunged into the sea, leaving only thin stretches of land and the Sunken Isles remaining above water. The Dark Elves, as Malekith's rebel Elves were now know, departed Nagarythe upon their Black Arks, eventually settling in the cold lands of Naggaroth. Those Elves of Nagarythe who opposed Malekith's rebellion remained in the shattered remains of their homeland, becoming the Shadow Warriors under the leadership of Alith Anar, the Shadow King.

Since the days of the Sundering, Nagarythe has seen more fighting and more death than any other place on Ulthuan. The Witch King has made a number of attempts to recapture his homeland, the armies of Dark Elves landing at the Shadowlands and using it as a base of operations. Each time, they have been repulsed at great cost the the High Elf defenders. Even when the land is not the site of full scale warfare, vicious guerilla warfare between the Shadow Warriors and the insidious Dark Elf Shades sent to infiltrate the land continues without end. This secret war between the heirs of Nagarythe is often known as the Shadow War.

The Kingdom of Nagarythe, now known as the Shadowlands, is a dark and desolate region, but was once the greatest of the Elven kingdoms. Here, the first Phoenix King once held court, and it was here that the greatest battles against Daemonkind were won. That desperate struggle hardened and embittered the folk of Nagarythe, so that other Elves came to regard them as a cruel and bloodthirsty people. After Aenarion's death his son Malekith inherited the kingdom. When Malekith rose against the rightful Phoenix King, he led his warriors in a savage and destructive war. Nagarythe was destroyed and many of its people fled with their evil master to the cold lands of the New World.[1a]

They became the Druchii, the Dark Elves — evil kin to the Asur of Ulthuan, or High Elves. Today, what little remains of the once-proud Kingdom of Nagarythe is treated with fear and distrust. It is uninhabited but for wanderers and beasts. The great fortress of Anlec, from where both Aenarion and Malekith ruled the proud people of Nagarythe, was destroyed during the Sundering. Since that time, the Dark Elves have repeatedly attacked, attempting to reclaim their ancient kingdom, but each time they have been repelled by the High Elves. The ruins of Anlec have been refortified, fought over, and cast down again more than once, and even today they draw the Dark Elves back to the lands of their ancestors. Some whisper that more Elves have died fighting over Anlec's ruins than anywhere else in Ulthuan.[1a]

Nagarythe's population was scattered and became nomadic, wandering in the wilderness of northern Ulthuan. The warriors of this realm are known as Shadow Warriors. Organised in small bands, they specialise in seeking and ambushing Dark Elf raiders. They favour dark tinted armour and tunics and plumes decorated with dark colours, especially blues and sombre greys.[2a]

The Sunken Isles

The war over possession of the ancient realm of Nagarythe, now a shattered series of isles, waves as strong now as it did five thousand years ago.[3a]

In an attempt to wrest control of these lands from the Shadow Warriors of Ulthuan, the Witch King has moved several Shade clans to the Shadowlands to fight against the interlopers defiling the ground of Nagarythe.[3a]

Malekith has promised these Shade Clans possession of any Nagarythe lands that they can wrest from the High Elves, and rewards them for every head of a Shadow Warrior sent to him in Naggarond. There is now sporadic but vicious guerrilla fighting between the Shadow Warriors of Ulthuan and these emigre Shades -- sometimes called the Sundered Clans or Reaver Shades. Malekith hopes that this fighting will sap the strength and morale of the Shadow Warriors, so that they will be swept away when the time for full invasion comes again.[3a]
