Maximillian von Königswald was the Elector Count and Grand Prince of Ostland until 2505 IC, although his son Oswald von Königswald had become acting Elector due to his father's dementia.[1a]

History[]

Maximilian von Königswald had once been a great statesman and warrior, who had fought at Emperor Luitpold's side many times. Young Karl Franz looked up to him, as the Elector had treated him as a son instead of a painted egg to be treasured and hid away like his own father. It was Maximilian who had convinced numerous Elector Counts to cast their vote for him as emperor, bringing the decision from an original score of four to eight to near-unanimous support for Karl Franz's ascension to the Imperial throne.[1b]

Yet the years had not been kind to Maximillian. Old age had made him senile and he suffered from severe dementia. His main pastime had become playing war games with real soldiers as miniatures.[1a] His main function in state affairs was setting his seal on documents his son gave him, whom he also no longer recognized and believed to be his own father.[1a]

Total War: Warhammer[]

In the timeline of the Total War: Warhammer games it is not known when Maximillian's reign as Elector Count of Ostland began but he was a trusted friend and ally to Emperor Luitpold and later to his son Karl Franz. He was known to flounce around the courts of the southern Empire, according to Marius Leitdorf, the Elector Count of Averland.[2]

At some point around 2501 IC, Maximillian was secretly murdered by a servant of the Chaos God Tzeentch, who then took on his form as the Elector Count of Ostland. The impostor kept himself away from court life for a year until 2502 IC, when he travelled to Altdorf for the election of the next emperor after the death of Luitpold. He attempted to have Karl Franz assassinated multiple times while publicly supporting him over Boris Todbringer, the Elector Count of Middenland and main rival to Karl Franz, all while "Maximilian" accompanied him when he tried to gain favour with the other electors.[2]

The impostor's cover was blown after only one Elector Count voted against Karl Franz since Boris Todbringer had decided to vote for Karl Franz for the sake of ensuring the unity of the Empire, meaning the only one who could have voted against him was "Maximilian."[2]

After confirming the death of his friend, Karl Franz was coronated and, as his first act as emperor, executed the schemer with the magical warhammer Ghal Maraz in front of the assembled Elector Counts. After his death the impostor's body mutated and deformed, giving proof to the horrified audience of Maximilian's replacement. Afterwards, the now-Emperor Karl Franz commanded that his ally Valmir von Raukov be raised as the new Elector Count of Ostland.[2]
