Matorea, formally the Principality of Matorea,[2a][3] also known as Matorca, is a port city rich in salt located on the Black Gulf in the eastern Border Princes south of the city of Akendorf.[1][3]
History[]
Battle of Matorea[]

A map that outlines the campaign of the Tomb King Settra the Imperishable in the Border Princes that culminated in the Battle of Matorea in 2276 IC.[5a]
The Battle of Matorea was fought between an army of Bretonnian exiles led by Sir Cecil Gastonne, "the Wyrm Slayer," and the undying legions of the Tomb Kings of Khemri, commanded by Settra the Imperishable himself around the year 2276 IC.[4][5a]
With the darkness of night filling the skies, the black ships of Settra's fleet began to disgorge their Undead cargo onto the beaches before Matorea. As the royal host approached, Sir Cecil Gastonne looked to the west. From beyond the horizon, the knights of Brionne approached, though whether they would arrive to find the defenders embattled, or that Settra's forces had swept through Matorea and on towards distant Bretonnia, he could not say.[4]
Yet the real outcome of this battle is unknown, shrouded forever in legends and ballads. Some claim that the Bretonnians handed the Imperishable a rare defeat, others that the the host of gleaming knights and brave peasants were lost in a gallant but doomed cause against the unrelenting tide of the Undead.[4][5a]
Writing of The Border Prince[]
Over the course of his thirty-year imprisonment in the Principality of Matorea, the Tilean philosopher, Imaschiavelli Venedetto penned his infamous treatise The Border Prince.[2a]
Venedetto's manuscript functions as a kind of guidebook for young border courtiers to the proper application of power (and guile) over a Border Principality. Venedetto concisely laid out the steps for seizing a Border Principality, and then how a prince should go about maintaining that power once it is seized.[2a]
