"Married? Of course! But not one about to be married, for such love is still true!"

—Luigi Pavarotti[5a]

Luigi Pavarotti is the personal physician of Baron Stefan Todbringer, son of Boris Todbringer, and the court physician of Middenheim.[1a] He is a former admiral of the Tilean Navy.[5a]

History[]

Originally native to the Tilean city-state of Miragliano, Luigi Pavarotti gained notoriety for his enormous "appetites," and was known universally in the Empire (despite his Tilean origins) as "Herr Doktor."[1a]

Pavarotti was once an admiral of the Tilean Navy. His wild (but completely true) sea stories go on for hours unless someone stops him, in which case he will good-naturedly promise to finish the story later.[5a]

Doktor Pavarotti was recently hired to care for the invalid Baron Stefan Todbringer, heir to the throne of Middenheim and Middenland, and has just arrived in Middenheim. He uses his knowledge of hypnotism to calm the baron down, with often gratifying success. Pavarotti lives in the Inner Palace in Middenheim very close to Stefan's rooms, but he is also often found enjoying the nightlife of certain neighborhoods in the city. He frequents the markets of the city (especially those in which food and drink are sold), can be found in the slums or singing in an inn.[2][3]

Pavarotti is a larger than life Tilean with a copious and omnisexual appetite who regards marriage as the end of pleasure.[1a][5a] His loud manners and dress sense tend to provoke strong reactions in others: there are those who loathe him, but his boisterous charisma earns him more friends than enemies. He is employed to assist in the care of Baron Stefan, but his medical skills are in truth only rudimentary. He does have a talent for charlatanry and, whilst it can hardly be called medicine, his programme of care involves hypnotising Stefan into a stupor. While medically dubious, it comes as a relief to many who have concerns about the young heir to Middenland.[1a]

Luigi has little idea of who influences Graf Boris Todbringer. He underestimates his own influence upon the head of House Todbringer, but the graf would listen to him out of gratitude for his work with Stefan. Luigi is entirely unconcerned with politics: his goals revolve only around the acquisition of carnal pleasures of all kinds, and the welfare of Baron Stefan.[5a]

Personality[]

Luigi is a huge and somewhat quirky character; he is fairly tall and heavily built (130 kg), but with a considerable amount of muscle underneath the fat mass. His face is framed with a mane of curly black hair and a rather thick and unkempt beard. Luigi is an extraordinary and amazing character, he yells more than he talks, makes abrupt gestures and seems half crazy. [2][3]

Luigi has enormous energy and appetites, and he does everything to excess: he dresses in bizarre outfits, and eats and drinks greedily. He likes stimulant drugs, dyes, extraordinarily strong liquors and will be happy to engage in any kind of sexual activity with anyone of any gender -- but he's basically a kind-hearted rogue. He will flirt outrageously with any female he meets, subtly or not so subtly, depending on his opinion of the woman in question.[5a]

He is a native of Miragliano in Tilea, and he begins to sing fragments of his beloved Miraglianese operas every so often. Despite his boisterous personality, Luigi can keep a secret if he thinks it is necessary. In short, he is not half as unbridled and impulsive as he appears to be.[2][3] He feels that Middenheim's establishment licensing laws should be revised so he can go carousing at any hour, day or night, as he could in Miragliano.[5a]

Luigi has a soft spot for attractive persons, especially Elves.[5a]

The Middenheim spymaster Nastasya Roskolnikov knows Pavarotti is actually a trustworthy man and that he is trying his best to help Stefan Todbringer. In the guise of Ursula von Lupe, she met him in Miragliano during a mission abroad. She knows that, below the fun-loving surface, he's a good man, an accomplished sea captain, and an expert hypnotist.[4a]

Luigi has an interest in Jade magic, although he will not give this away. Whilst he is a layman, magic is not strange to him -- Luigi has lived an interesting life.[5a]

Despite his mannerisims, Luigi Pavarotti is the heart of discretion for those he cares about.[5a]

Trivia[]

The name Luigi Pavarotti is probably a pun about the famed Italian tenor Luciano Pavarotti.
