Guests of Reikland by the Emperor's command, wherever they went, they were at risk from ignorant locals, so local authorities were ordered to protect them to prevent a diplomatic incident with Cathay.[1a]
However, in Ubersreik, where no formal command structure existed and the local State Army was stretched paper-thin, escort duties were contracted out to a disparate party of mercenaries, who had to keep them safe at all costs, even against a group of assassins.[1a]
