Lichtenberg was an Imperial province founded by Emperor Sigismund II as part of a southern expansion of the Empire during his reign sometime between 479 and 505 IC. It was established in the region of the Border Princes, a wild and tribal region located to the south of the Empire. Sigismund II's campaign in this area aimed to bring the unruly lands under Imperial control and secure the Empire's southeastern borders.[1a]
To solidify Imperial dominance over the region, Sigismund II built a series of castles and fortifications in Lichtenberg. These castles were designed to protect the Empire from threats coming from the south.[1a]
The creation of Lichtenberg was part of Sigismund II's larger "Drive to the Frontiers" initiative, where he expanded Imperial territory and influence through military conquest and strategic infrastructure development.[1a]
