Karak Grom ("Defiant Hold" in Khazalid) is the southernmost of the Dwarf holds of the Karaz Ankor, situated near where The Vaults give way to the Apuccini Mountains. The wealthy Dwarf stronghold is carved into the steep eastern face of Cleaved Mountain (Karaz Mar) and gazes out over a wide mountain valley, where the western fork of the River Skiros winds its way below.[1a][4a]
The trade route known as River Road (Ruvalkdrin) traces the river's path through Kharnos Forest, connecting the hold to markets in the towns of Lakoras and Thesos in the Border Princes. Kharnos Forest is rumoured to be haunted, and its shadowed paths are troubled by bands of outlaws and sporadic Orc raids.[4a]
Living up to its defiant reputation, Karak Grom has endured countless Orc assaults over the centuries. A few invasions have come close to overwhelming its defences, yet none have succeeded in breaking through its mighty gates. The decaying skulls of past Orc warbosses still grimly mark the approaches to the hold, a warning to any who would threaten it.[4a]
In 2510 IC the hold had a population of about 3,200 adult Dwarfs according to some estimates, while others held it to be much larger at 12,800.[1a][4a]

- Domatburg - The largest settlement of Men in The Vaults with a population of about 210.[1a]

- Khazid Urbaz - A village controlled by Karak Grom with a population of about 90 Dwarfs.[1a]

- Thrung The Hard - Thrung was a Dwarf Lord of Karak Grom, a skilled Dwarf general armed with a warhammer, heavy plate armour, and a shield.[2a]
