Karak Eksfilaz is a Dwarf hold located in The Vaults.[1a]
The westernmost of all the holds of the Karaz Ankor, Karak Eksfilaz ("Whispering Aspen Mountain" in Khazalid), takes its name from the heavily forested, aspen-covered peak upon which it stands. Much of the hold's trade is conducted with northern Tilea, particularly through the towns of Campogrotta and Toscania. These towns are accessible via the Via Zaffiro (Zaffenwegaz among the Dwarfs), a trade route that winds down the valley of the River Arena.[2a]
This same road passes the junction that leads to the towering iron gates of Karak Eksfilaz, continuing on to the northern end of the Novalone Pass. Through this route, the Dwarfs maintain trade ties with Quenelles and the southern regions of Bretonnia.[2a]
However, the miners of Karak Eksfilaz face constant threats from Skaven and Night Goblins. Though these two species often clash, they are quick to forge uneasy pacts when it serves their mutual interest in attacking the Dwarfs. Their unstable, haphazard tunneling occasionally breaches the Dwarfs' own passages into the Underdeep, allowing creatures such as giant rats and Cave Squigs to infiltrate the hold. In response, Karak Eksfilaz fields a specialised Dwarf military unit known as the Vermin Hunters (Nathadredez Agri in Khazalid), who excel in tracking and exterminating these vile creatures within the tight natural caverns and winding tunnels deep below.[2a]
