Justintine of Varenna was a Mercenary General of Tilea.[1a]

The historian Kurt Breizenhof from Nuln later recorded the legend in a treatise. According to legend, the treasure chest was guarded by a man named Hurcio.[1a]

History[]

According to legend, Justintine introduced the practice of taking the paymaster's treasure chest with him on the battlefield so that it was always in sight of the mercenaries as an incentive. Allegedly this happened because the city of Varenna could not be held against the Orcs and Goblins who first struck Tilea between 475 and 998 IC due to the collapse of its walls as a result of an earthquake. Justintine had all the treasures that were stored in the city taken away when they were in retreat, so that they would not fall to the plundering Greenskins.[1a]

The Tileans pursued them to the coast, however, where they could not go any further, and the mercenary army Ugwarg, the chief boss of the Greenskins, had to fight. It is said that the inspiring effects of the treasure that was to be distributed after the battle motivated the soldiers to withstand the onslaught of the superior Orcs and Goblins and repel the enemy. The overwhelming success of this tactic meant that in future the treasure chest and paymasters would replace the army standard of the standard bearer in mercenary armies.[1a]
