"So they sent me a witch with a terrible twitch to ask how my future impressed her. She took one look at me and cried, "He, he he, HE! What else could he be but a jester?" A jester? A jester? A funny idea. No butcher, no baker, no candlestick maker, and me with the look of a fine undertaker impressed her as a jester?"
- —Jason le Wallier, Chief Gestour to King Louen Leoncoeur[1]

A warrior jester of Bretonnia
A jester, also known as a gestour, buffoon, or a jongleur, are lowborn peasants who specialise in entertaining the Old World's nobility, often with songs, jokes and acrobatic displays.[1][2]
Some Bretonnian jesters have been known to fight alongside their masters on the battlefield, using their athletic talents to confuse and distract their enemies.[1][2]
Before their disappearance from the Old World, Gnomes were ideally suited to this role. It was true that they rarely remained in the job for long - sooner or later they either got fed up with being isolated from their own kind, or got carried away and had to be dismissed for insulting some visiting dignitary. Nevertheless, those Imperial nobles unable to find a Gnomish jester had often been heard to bemoan the fact that they 'didn't have a Gnome to go to.[3a]
