Ivan Radinov is a prince of Kislev and the heroic younger brother of the ruling Tzarina Katarin Bokha.[1a]
History[]
While his sister oversees Kislev with icy efficiency, Prince Ivan spends his time on daring adventures. He is nominally the cavalry commander of the Gryphon Legion, but he rarely spends much time in their barracks headquarters. He prefers his freedom and dangerous lifestyle, but when a real threat emerges and his beloved sister is in danger, Ivan leads the grim Winged Lancers of the Gryphon Legion in defence of Mother Kislev.[1a]
Wargear[]
Prince Ivan is a natural hero, and by using his wit, cunning, swordplay, and unparalleled bravado, will always try to save those in danger. However, should the prince fail, he is so overcome with grief that he can do nothing but defend himself![1a]
- Sword of Heroes - This sword shines with the undimmed fire of righteousness -- smiting down evil wherever it may be found.
- Boots of Seven Leagues - Young Prince Ivan used these boots to escape the dreaded sorcerer Koshei the Immortal when he rescued Vasilia the Wise from his clutches.[2a]
- Silverhoof - Ivan rides a great barded warhorse which he acquired from Koshei the Immortal, said to be the fastest steed in all Kislev.
Canon Conflict[]
Prince Ivan is mentioned in Citadel Journal 14, 15, and 16, and other publications published in 1996. However, every other source regarding the modern Kislevite royal family has mentioned Tzarina Katarin as the only child of Tzar Boris Bokha, with the commander of the Gryphon Legion being Tordimir Lubovasyn.
Andy Hall, the writer of Total War: Warhammer III and a former employee of Games Workshop, confirmed in an interview that in Total War: Warhammer III alternate timeline Katarin is an only child.[3]
Trivia[]
The figure of Prince Ivan as a younger brother to the nation's ruler who is an adventurer with a daring lifestyle is a possible allusion to Ivan Tsarevich, a popular archetype of Russian folklore. Ivan Tsarevich is often the youngest son out of three, usually the son of a tzar and a popular figure in many folktales involving his adventures.
Two other characters mentioned in passing as part of Prince Ivan's backstory, "Koshei the Immortal" and "Vasilia the Wise", are also taken directly from Russian folklore. Koschei, called "the Immortal", or "the Deathless", is a common antagonist in Russian fairytales who is under a spell which prevents him from being killed, even facing off against Ivan Tsarevich in various tales.
