An Iron Hail Gunner

Iron Hail Gunners are a ranged infantry unit of Grand Cathay's Grand Imperial Army. They are each outfitted with an Iron Hail Gun that is a short-range Cathayan Blunderbuss with a large bore for close-in work that can rip through almost anything if positioned correctly. The gunners themselves are lightly armoured, making them vulnerable if surprised by melee troops.[1]

However, should they bring their guns to bear even for a moment, it spells doom for even the most heavily-armored warriors. Their range is much shorter than either the archers or crossbowmen found elsewhere in the Cathayan army, but the strength of blackpowder gives the Iron Hail Gunners quite an armour-piercing punch when they line up a shot.[1]

Though short-ranged, the Iron Hail Gun is ideally suited to defence, either in the close confines of a city or from the battlements of the Great Bastion. Cathayan commanders often deploy their Iron Hail Gunners on the flanks of their formations where they can discourage even heavily-armoured horsemen, the concentrated shot from their Iron Hail Guns able to punch through shields and plate at close range.[2a]
