A herdsman of the Empire
Herdsmen are solitary individuals who spend much of their time alone, looking after the domestic animals necessary for pastoral agriculture, moving their herds and flocks from pasture to pasture, and generally leading a fairly dull life. Nevertheless, they learn to look after themselves too, for they have to defend their animals from predators and bands of thieves and rustlers.[1a]
Herdsmen often have a natural affinity with animals of all kinds, even though they may have grown up tending only a few domesticated species.[1a]
