Gridi Scumbeard was a renowned Dwarf pirate captain of Sartosa.[1a]

During his career he began to appreciate and admire Mydas the Mean, his paymaster, and in particular Mydas' incredible cheapness and reluctance to part with gold, even to the extent of refusing to tell the Dwarf where his own stash was. Fortunately for Mydas, Gridi came to a bad end in a fight with Corsairs before he realised that Mydas had relocated his stash with the intention of keeping it.[1a][Note 1]

Gridi had an old scroll in his treasure chest with a number of strange Lizardmen glyphs. The scroll was actually a magical "warrant of trust" carried by Skink interpreters to give them an aura of credibility when dealing with or seeking to mislead outsiders. Some adventurer long ago must have acquired the scroll in Lustria, thinking it was worth something to a wizard, and eventually it found its way into the Dwarf pirate's chest.[1b]

The effect of the scroll is that people will believe whatever the carrier promises. Their trust in him will be complete.[1b]

Now the scroll is among Mydas' possessions, but the paymaster ignores its true value and uses it as a treasure map on which he marks the hiding places of several pay chests which he has heroically "rescued" from the confusion of battle when defeat seemed inevitable.[1b]

Trivia[]

Gridi's name is a pun on the word "greedy".
