Concept art for a Cathayan Grand Canyon created for Total War: Warhammer III.
A Grand Cannon is the most basic form of artillery used by the military forces of Grand Cathay. It packs a punch more than capable of toppling monsters or city walls, while its flaming, armour-piercing projectiles will make short work of smaller foes placed in their path.
Cathayan Oxen carry them to war, pulling these guns to battle from the city walls and Great Bastion they usually inhabit. More suited to firing from on-high, these cannons will still rip apart anything they gain sighting of but benefit greatly from smartly used terrain. Shaped like Cathayan Dragon heads and belching flaming projectiles, they are not a subtle representation of Grand Cathay's power.[1]
The armies of Grand Cathay use many kinds of cannon in their armies, most forged in the workshops of the city of Nan-Gau in the Northern Provinces. These include massive Grand Cannons shaped like roaring Cathayan Dragons, each one able to belch fire or spit flaming cannonballs.[2a]
The walls of the Great Bastion are lined with such artillery, the fortress towers of the wall looking like Bretonnian War Galleons, with sides bristling with row upon row of cannon. When the armies of Grand Cathay march to war, some of these great guns are set upon oxen-hauled gun carriages, where they can lend their impressive firepower to the Dragon Emperor's soldiers.[2a]
