The Gloves of Midas are based upon the ancient Greek myth of King Midas of Phrygia in Asia Minor, reputed to have been granted the ability by the god Dionysus to turn everything he touched into pure gold. This myth later led to the term in English known as "having the golden touch," or the "Midas touch" when referring to someone who seems to be able to earn money effortlessly.
