The Free Companies of Remas are a military force comprised of men and women from Reman towns or villages that have taken up arms, willingly or not, to serve alongside the armies of the republic and defend the lands of their birth, or to venture around the Known World in search of riches.[1a]
Of the other Tilean city-states, only Remas recruits its own citizens, selling the right to recruit to contractor-captains called condottieri for a period of service, after which they’re free to seek work elsewhere.[3a] Short capes and broad-guarded shortswords are typical of these armies.[4a]
Reman officers are steadfast, and their years of training have offered them excellent leadership.[2a]
Despite perhaps being the most renowned, the Free Companies of Remas are not the only Tilean free companies, there are others who sell their services to northern lords as mercenaries throughout merchant families who act as intermediaries.[6a]
