Marshes of Madness

A Mourkain temple retaken by the marshes.

The Marshes of Madness are a swampland in the heart of the Badlands. During the days of great Nehekhara, this region was known as the Sinking Marshes of Khernarch.[2a]

In the southern reaches of the dusty plains south of the Old World, the Blind River flows into a depression surrounded by a crescent of hills stretching from the Dragonback Mountains to the desert sands of Nehekhara. The waters drain into a natural basin of wet, boggy marshland known as the Marshes of Madness. The marshes are a hazardous place lit by strange ethereal marshlights where the unwary can sink below the swampy waters and where creatures such as River Trolls lie in wait for unwary travelers.[4] These mist-covered swamps are trackless and nigh impossible to cross. Yet, despite the treacherous nature of these ghastly marshes, many Goblin tribes dwell there, skulking in great stilted huts that rise precariously from the deep mire.[5a][3a]

The Marshes are avoided by all but the desperate. It is a realm of the Undead and a remnant of a past civilisation, forever cursed when the Crown of Sorcery was discovered on the banks of the Blind River. It is now a virulent swamp that is shunned by all. Within the marshes lies Morgheim and the insidious Tree of Beards, a testament to the folly of Dwarfs when they once tried to tame the swamp.[1a][1b]
