Festerhole was an old Skaven warren, the first of its like to exist beneath the ancient Dwarf Hold of Karak Angkul. It preceded Bonestash by several centuries or two thousand Skaven "birth-cycles." One of its inhabitants was the Grey Seer Thratsnik. The spiritual leader of the warren, the Grey Seer had made off with a powerful Skaven artefact called the Hand of Vecteek, which he had stolen from the Under-Empire's capital at Skavenblight.[1a]

Some time later, disaster would strike Festerhole. A cadre of Dwarf miners had found the settlement and taken steps to eradicate the verminous Skaven infestation discovered within. The Dwarfs killed most of the ratmen in a fierce battle and sealed those few survivors in their own warren with a series of cave-ins. Without the numbers to dig themselves free, the ratmen descended into cannibalism and finally starvation, spelling the doom of the entire warren.[1a]

Centuries later, Grey Seer Skraekual would find records of the warren within the libraries of the Order of the Grey Seers. Tasked with recovering the Hand of Vecteek by Seer Lord Kritislik, the Grey Seer would re-discover the warren and witness the fates of the ratmen within. By now, they were husks and bones, with only the Hand of Vecteek retaining its shape and form--though in truth it was not the Hand of Vecteek but the hand of Thratsnik who had devoured the actual artefact, and left his own hand in its place to be recovered. In a further twist, his hand had a secret Mark of Khorne inscribed upon it, which would lead to disastrous consequences for any who tried to use the hand to summon the Verminlord Vecteek.[1a]
