The heraldry of Baroness Elspeth Magritta VI of Westerland in 2276 IC. In the final years of the Anarchy she maintained a strong claim to the Imperial throne.
Elspeth Magritta VI was the Baroness of Westerland in ca. 2276 IC who had an outstanding claim to the throne of the fractured Empire of Man in the final years of the Anarchy. She had several rivals among the other Elector Counts, such as Sigismund Ulric of Osterlund, Ludwig XII of Talabec, and Wilhelm I of Reikland.[1][3]
During this period, the Barony of Westerland was one of the four great provinces of the Empire whose rulers sought to contest for the Imperial throne. It was then, as it is now, a wealthy and cosmopolitan state, with almost the entirety of its population centred in the great commercial city-state of Marienburg. The wealth of that city allowed Westerland's ruler to field vast armies to defend their claim to the throne of the Empire.[1][3]
In ca. 2276 IC Elspeth Magritta VI gathered together a force of her own Westerland state troops supplemented by mercenaries to confront the growing threat of the forces of Chaos under the command of the Exalted Champion of Chaos Undivided Frydaal the Chainmaker along the coast of the Sea of Claws in Westerland near the ruins of the town of Hollum that the Chaos-worshippers were using as a base. Unfortunately, Frydaal had learned of the Pretender Empress' offensive and had braved the fading winds of winter to cross the Sea of Claws early and take up a defensive position outside Hollum with her Chaos Marauders and Chaos Warriors.[2]
The stage was set for the first proper battle between the two forces at Hollum, which would prove to be one of the largest engagements between the forces of the Empire and the Warriors of Chaos before the start of the Great War Against Chaos some twenty-five years later.[2]
