Red Duke campaign

The location of the fortress of the Red Duke in the Bretonnian dukedom of Aquitaine.

The fortress Crac de Sang was the seat of the Bretonnian Vampire Lord known as the Red Duke, constructed by hundreds of enslaved Aquitanians whom the Vampire forced to build his new fortress for having stood aside as his wife was lost to despair over his apparent death and usurpers had plotted to take control of his dukedom of Aquitaine.[1a]

Constructed upon a hill overlooking the River Morceaux and the Forest of Chalons, the fortress was located at a strategically vital angle, allowing watch posts to see as far as the Massif Orcal. The old dukes of Aquitaine had commissioned a watchtower to be constructed upon it, but it fell into disrepair and was abandoned long before the Red Duke came to claim the site as his own.[1a]

Within the Crac du Sang, the Red Duke held court, feasting on the daughters of his enemies before their imprisoned fathers. Impaled prisoners formed a garden that demonstrated what would happen to those that displeased the Vampiric duke.[1a]

Following his first defeat, the fortress of the Red Duke was razed by the armies of Royarch Louis the Righteous and then plundered repeatedly by Orcs and Goblins, only to serve as a lair for Ghouls later.[1a]

When the Red Duke returned a second time, in his madness he saw the Ghouls as peasants that had trespassed in his castle. Due to his insanity, he saw the fortress standing in all its old splendour instead as the broken ruin it had become. Upon entering, he found all of his riches and heirlooms gone.[1a]
