"Oh? You think to fight me in the style of a Tilean streetfighter?’ -- ‘The trick is to employ the cape as not only shield but weapon. Catch your enemy’s blade in its folds, if you can, but there is many another trick. -- ‘Strike the hand of some handsome noble and watch them recoil from so minor a blow, dropping dagger or sword from fingers stung by so little a thing.’ -- ‘Then one can always cast one’s cloak about the enemy. He will panic, trying to fend off your cloak, and exposing himself for one instant to the steel in your hand."

Vespero using his cloak as a shield.
A cloak is a type of loose, long garment worn over clothing, mostly but not always as outerwear for the outdoors, serving the same purpose as an overcoat, protecting the wearer from the weather. It may form part of a uniform. Cloaks generally fasten at the neck or over the shoulder, vary in length, from hip all the way down to the ankle, mid-calf being the normal length. They may have an attached hood and may cover and fasten down the front, in which case they have holes or slits for the hands to pass through. However, cloaks are almost always sleeveless.
Cloaks and capes are a stylish alternative to coats. Capes are shorter and worn in the spring and early autumn, while cloaks are regular accessories in the harsh winters and driving rainstorms. Cloaks have a semicircular or square cut, as dictated by the current trends in fashion, and fasten with a string, clasp, or brooch. Most cloaks in the Old World have hoods, but capes never have hoods; they merely cover the shoulders.[6a]
Both are designed to keep the wearer warm and dry. Better cloaks are lined with fur, while cheaper cloaks are one-layer.[5a]
Tilean Fighting Style[]
Some experts in fencing and parrying recommend keeping a cloak of heavy fabric handy. When bunched around the arm it can be used to distract opponents or divert their attacks. It can even be flung over an opponent in the hope that they will become lost in its folds. However, cloaks are not well suited for entangling attacks without the appropriate skill.[1a]
The land of Tilea is famous for its numerous vendettas, as rich and poor families alike resolve their feuds with the use of duellists. The most popular equipment in use by these fighters are the dagger and the cloak as used by the infamous mercenaries of Vespero's Vendetta.[2a][3a]
Some duellists hide in their second hand a pistol but this is considered a violation of the code that is used to define the rules of a duel.[2a][3a]
