Chainswords are near-mythical and legendary Chaos Weapons, a type of arcane sword sacred to the Blood God Khorne said to roar with the fury of a raging beast. Its jagged teeth can eat through flesh and steel alike as if they were parchment.[1a]
When the wielder presses the trigger, the teeth of this weapon come to life, whirring and grinding, dripping foul oil everywhere. If the chainsword is parried by a non-magical weapon, it automatically rips through the parrying weapon, destroying it.[2a]
History[]
Red Hound Kolhchis, a lone Champion of Khorne, acquired his chainsword deep in the eastern skull lands whilst carving his way through a tribe of Black Orcs. It appears as a normal sword except, instead of a razor edge, a line of jagged teeth run down one side.[1a]
At the wielder's command, the teeth race down the blade, ripping apart armour and flesh as easily as if they were parchment. The beast-hilt howls while it does so and growls lowly like a beast if left unsated.[1a]
Unsurprisingly, the weapon only appears in the possession of Khornate Chaos Champions. The weapon seems to embody the desires of Khorne, and is often as eager to rebound and tear through the guts of its wielder as it is to disembowel the foe, as was demonstrated by the fate of Red Hound Kolhchis himself.[1a]
Four examples of this weapon were seen by the scholar Richter Kless before he wrote the infamous Liber Chaotica.[1a]
Trivia[]
The Chainsword is an obvious reference to a similar weapon from the Warhammer 40,000 setting, the dark science fiction sister universe of Warhammer Fantasy Battle. The shared connection between the two universes is often teased by Games Workshop, but never confirmed.[1a]
