"Open the gates, and may the Lady have mercy on their souls."

Sir de Raker prepares to face the Tilean army.[1a]
Lovarre

Château Lovarre and its ruler Lord Tibault, accompanied by Lord Gaston.[1a]

Château Lovarre is a Bretonnian castle located in Carcassonne in southern Bretonnia, near the Tilean border.[1a]

Given the position of the castle on the borderlands between the two realms, Lovarre is a prime target for annexation by the Tileans.[1a]

Despite this, the settlement is far from the thoroughfares of Bretonnia, and its defence is left to the soldiers of Lord Tibault, the ruler of the castle.[1a]

History[]

When the settlement came under siege by a warband of three dozen Tilean mercenaries, all hope seemed lost, for the settlement was too far away from the other settlements of Bretonnia to warrant any aid. Sharlotta, the daughter of Lovarre's lord, fled to her chambers and desperately prayed to the Lady of the Lake for help. She prayed for a knight to arrive like in the stories of legend, a hero who would save their lives and souls.[1a]

The next morning, after yet another bloody attack, Sharlotta's prayers were answered when a lone knight rode up to the castle's gates, heralded by raucous applause and celebration. A great feast was held to welcome this hero. The knight was known as Sir de Raker, and he announced that he had arrived in Lovarre as part of his Lady-given duty to uphold honour and justice. He then requested a token of favour from the adoring Sharlotta, before adjourning to the keep's Grail Chapel to perform his sacred preparations for the coming battle.[1a]

The Tilean mercenaries at the siege of Château Lovarre[1a]

That night, when a fresh surge of Tilean mercenaries assaulted the keep, Sir de Raker stepped out of the gates alone. The Tileans' initial bemusement on seeing a single knight arrive to fight them turned to fear when the living saint began to blaze with the light of the Blessing of the Lady.[1a]

Sir de Raker lunged into the Tilean army, slaughtering multiple foes with each sweep of his sword, whilst weapons simply shattered and broke when brought against the holy warrior. Soon, after much bloodshed, the Tileans routed, but de Raker gave no quarter. Even as they fell and begged for mercy he continued to slaughter the enemies of Bretonnia. The Grail Knight did not stop his onslaught until the battlefield was strewn with Tilean corpses, and his once shining plate armour was covered in their blood.[1a]

Turning to the defenders of Lovarre, their faces a mixture of fear and awe, Sir de Raker instructed the keep's lord to return his daughter's favour and give her his thanks. With this, de Raker departed, his sacred task complete.[1a]
