A castellan is a noble with responsibility for overseeing the daily operations of a major castle or other stronghold, which is usually owned by his feudal superior. He has full authority over the castle and its lands unless his lord is present. The term is particularly common in Bretonnia.[1a]
In Bretonnia, some castellans are responsible for the overall defence and fortification of their dukedom, bearing titles such as "Castellan of Bastonne" and "Castellan of Quenelles." These castellans are afforded a much greater degree of power, with lesser castellans and marquises owing their direct allegiance to this official, who is a noble lord in their own right.[2][3]
