Brandy, made by distilling wine, is more rarely drunk as it is far more expensive than said-beverage. Adding water to brandy is a sign that you are an uncultured nouveau-riche or a poverty-stricken provincial knight with no taste. Some snobbish merchants and nobles use this as a test.[1a]
