"The Dammaz Kron does feel light in my hand this day. The night has been long, but I would not have shirked this duty for any rest or repast that any king could provide. My hand is weary but -- at last! -- the final vile deed of the Squatter King of Black Crag has been struck. Let it be known on this day that the Urk did fall in battle and most ignobly. May the animal's gods accord him the welcome he is due! With the king's fall did his army splinter and the cave grobi retreat to their holes. May Grimnir smite the grobi for their cowardice for therein lies tomorrow's battle. Thoughts of tomorrow come coloured by a most unusual sense -- hope --for Douric Grimlander did in the night bring news of the birth of a prince. May Thorgrim Ironhammer grow as old and as strong as his father. May he rule the halls of Karak Eight Peaks with a heart of iron. For this day at least, let all dawi rejoice. Karak Eight Peaks has herself a new king and her future is assured. Until tomorrow's battle."
- —Thorgrim Grudgebearer, excerpt from the Book of Remembering[2b]
The Book of Remembering is the sacred tome that chronicles the deeds of the mightiest heroes of the Dwarfs and the crucial events of their race's history.[1a][2a]
Just like the Great Book of Grudges, there are several of these books, perhaps one for each hold of the Karaz Ankor.[1a][2a]
The version held in Karak Eight Peaks is hung on a locked chain. Bound in iron, it is heavier than it looks, to the point that the priestesses of the Ancestor Goddess Valaya tasked to guard it are forced to walk with bent backs and a shuffle to transport it.[2a]
The loremasters of Karaz-a-Karak store the Book of Remembering of the lost hold of Karak Varn. Ralkan, perhaps the only survivor, had done much to fill it with all the Dwarfs' deeds in the time it took to reach Karaz-a-Karak in the hope that the names of those slain at Karak Varn would be remembered, if nothing else.[3a]
Quotes[]
"In this year was the source of the Undkar befouled with warpstone poison... In this year, was the Undkar again declared clean."
- —Record about the Undkar River stored in the Book of Remembering of Karak Eight Peaks.[2a]
"Norkragg was a king of the elder age, one of the first of Ungor. So the Book of Remembering held, Norkragg was a miner at heart, even eschewing his royal duties to pursue his passion, a fact that left him without queen and heir. In his tenure, Norkragg hauled more coal from the rock face and to the under-forge than any since."
