Merchant Prince Bensario is one of the most powerful man in Pavona, second only to the ruling Princess Lucrezzia Belladonna. He hopes to form an alliance with Remas thanks to the union of his daughter with a Triumvir of the Council of Fifty.[1a]
It is rumoured that Bensario entertained hopes to become the fifth husband of Lucrezzia Belladonna, an aspiration which no doubt made Bensario's current wife both furious and nervous.[1a]
He aims to strengthen Pavona's position with the marriage of his daughter, Princess Juliana Bensario. The support of the Republic of Remas would be of great benefit in quashing once and for all the foolish ambitions of the princes of Trantio. Prince Umberto Gambini holds a great deal of influence with the other ruling families in the Republic, and with him on Pavona's side, Prince Bensario thinks he may just be able to gain Remas as an ally in any forthcoming campaign against Trantio.[1a]

As confusing as it may sound, Bensario is repeatedly described as Prince of Pavona, but the same title is given to Lucrezzia Belladonna even though she is not yet his wife. This would mean that the office of Merchant Prince at least in this case allows for two unmarried rulers. To corroborate the situation is added the fact that Bensario has the chamberlain of Pavona, Masario, under his orders.[1a]
