Screaming Bell

A Screaming Bell of the Skaven that is carried to wreak havoc in battle.

A bell is a small ringing device used to signal for music or a variety of other purposes. Most bells of this size are nothing more than cowbells, crude hoods of metal with a piece of rope and a clapper that issue a dull sound. Better bells have a pleasant chiming sound.[1a]

But to some civilisations, the bell is not some playful trinket or an instrument of song: its deep tolls instead stir fear in people's hearts. Three grim examples of bells in the Warhammer World include the totem-bells of the Lazargh Ogres far in the east, the Screaming Bells of the Skaven, and the bells used by the Daemons of Nurgle.

Nurglish Bells[]

Warhammer Daemons of Chaos Plaguebearer

A Plaguebearer with his bell.

Bells, evoking those long used by the disease-ridden of the Old World to warn healthy people to avoid them, or larger bells tolled during funerals, are used often by the Daemons of the Plague God Nurgle.

From the lowliest Plaguebearer to the mightiest Great Unclean Ones, the servants of Nurgle ring bells to herald the coming "gifts" of the Fly Lord.

Ogre Bells[]

The Lazarghs attach bells to their totems as their pilgrims go to the Great Maw, to offer their supplications and offerings to their dread god.[2a]

Skaven Screaming Bells[]

The Skaven forge Screaming Bells in Skavenblight from bronze alloy laced with warpstone. Masses of fanatical mobs bring them to the battlefield on platforms, borne and rang by Rat Ogres and led by Grey Seers. Each toll of the Screaming Bell stirs the Skaven hordes into a reckless frenzy, driving them into greater acts of reckless savagery.
