The aurochs are a species of autochthonous cattle that inhabit the foothills of the Black Mountains on the side that corresponds to the Border Princes. These regions are covered with thorny trees and shrubs, and are not good for cultivation, but they are suitable grazing areas for the aurochs, as they have very woolly skin and strong mouths, so they hardly feel discomfort from the thorny vegetation of the that feed mainly.
The aurochs are raised and herded by members of nomadic herding tribes known as Zani, as they supply them with everything they need to live: meat to eat, leather, and thick wool for tents and clothing. When prickly food is scarce, the Zani go down to the Border Princes to plunder farms and fertile areas so their cattle can feed, inevitably leading to clashes with the local Princes.
