If you can find a pdf of the 8th edition core book, read from pg. 156 - 269. It contains the major historical events of the world as well as an overview of each race.

From there, read the armybooks of the races you find most interesting. After that, read the novels associated with the particular race/faction.

As said before, starting with a big article for the main factions usually helps. My personal recommendation would be the Empire, the main human nation, with a long history involving everyone and everything at some point.

From there follow whatever links seem interesting and you'll soon find you've spent a good year staring at things.

Do all that stuff ^^^ and if you aren't sure about something just put up a post and ask, one of the nerds will probably know or have a rough idea or be able to point you in the right direction. My only question is, EX star wars fan, why ex?

Here you are that should get you started, I’d also suggest reading some Black Library material and the WHFRP 2ed core rule book.
