Can someone tell me why dwarves only use weapons like an ax or hammer but dont using
a sword ?
I think it has something to do with environment and the people they fight. Axes and hammers are more "greater impact" damage dealers than a sword if you get what I mean. Skaven and Greenskins who come in large groups are easily defeated by those weapons rather than a sword. Could be wrong though
Swords can only benefit from great strength when they are big. Short swords would be better suited for fast attackers. Vikings, for instance, had swords with no sharp edges. They were used for crushing like a hammer. They were big guys compared to the rest of Europeans.
Also note that both hammers and axes are used as tools by Dwarfs, as well as pick axes and mattocks. So they dont need to even forge "weapons". They use what they carry to fix stuff, chop or mine. And because their craftsmanship is so superior, they are not concern about their weapons breaking while used as tools and vice-versa.
Just a side note, but I think it's "illegal" for dwarfs to use spears?
I may be completely wrong, it's just something I heard in a conversation
They have spear throwers (war engines) I think but beside that I've never seen a Dwarf use a spear. Probably to low quality of a weapon for a Dwarf.
Plus the fact that fighting in mountainous regions and below ground isn't very beneficial when you carry a large pike or spear around.
I think that the story typed here previously is right.
Swords are more about technique, being able to not only slam but also pin-point enemy weaknesses in their defences. They require far more training to master fully than the hack 'n slash weapons do, like axes and hammers.
And since Dwarfs are fully focused on keeping tight formations, taking massive hits in the process but dealing tremendous damage at the same time, axes and hammers are the ideal weapons for that.
In real life history, spears and pikes suffered from any terrain that wasn't flat. Pikes especially. The Dwarves are in a mountainous area, so that covers that.
As for swords however, the average sword is longer than blunt weapons and axes. In tight cave spaces, a shorter weapon can at times be advantageous since it won't catch on walls etc.
Axes also resemble pick-axes. So it might be as simple as that.
But in all honesty, in Warhammer it might just be an aesthetic choice.
Simple. Because one cannot carve out mountain rock with a sword
In movies like the Hobbit the dwarves fight a lot with his swords and it works fine for them. But LOTR and Warhammer are different i would say.
Indeed they are
What do you think?
